The Loneliness Epidemic—and a Creative Prescription

In 2023, Vivek Murthy issued a warning that stopped many public health leaders in their tracks. America, he said, is facing an epidemic of loneliness. The advisory, released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, revealed a startling reality: roughly half of U.S. adults report experiencing measurable levels of loneliness. But the most striking finding was this: Loneliness is not just an emotional experience. It is a serious health risk. Research cited in the report shows that chronic loneliness carries health risks comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It

My Hope Series | From Dee-Dee’s Hope Chest

At Medicine & Music, we meet people where they are — bringing physician-informed wellness conversations, music, and human connection directly into community spaces. Through Dee-Dee’s Hope Chest, women have long gathered in a private, supportive space to share life’s challenges, caregiving journeys, health concerns, grief, resilience, and hope. The My Hope Series brings selected stories forward — shared voluntarily by members of this community — so that others may feel seen, supported, and less alone in their own journey. Each story reflects the power of being heard and the healing that

J-o-y.

Not the kind that shows up at parties — but the kind that arrives when someone sits beside you… or when a familiar song unlocks a memory at just the right moment. As recently married empty nesters, our lives were supposed to be getting quieter. Instead, one of us spends his days caring for older adults, as a physician, listening for what’s said, and what isn’t. While the other works in marketing communications and sings, often discovering that a melody can restore a sense of joy words simply can’t.

Our Community Outreach Programs

Health Education Through Community Outreach

Our physician-led outreach programs deliver trusted, non-clinical preventive health education directly within community-based settings. Sessions focus on stress management, medication safety, healthy aging, and understanding preventive care in clear, accessible language that supports informed health decisions.

Seniors, Wellness & Songs

We partner with senior living communities to provide physician-informed wellness education in supportive group settings. Music engagement is intentionally integrated to reduce isolation, encourage participation, and create welcoming environments where older adults feel comfortable asking questions and learning together.

Women’s Wellness & Growth

Our Women’s Wellness outreach offers a supportive, non-clinical space for women to receive physician-guided health education focused on emotional wellbeing, stress reduction, and preventive self-care. Sessions are delivered in community and faith-based settings to ensure inclusive access to trusted health information

Why Physician-Led Community Outreach Matters

Many older adults and women face barriers to accessing trusted, preventive health information outside of clinical visits. Limited mobility, transportation challenges, and health misinformation can lead to increased stress, reduced confidence in managing health decisions, and social isolation.

Medicine & Music provides physician-led, non-clinical health education in trusted community and faith-based settings, helping individuals better understand preventive care, emotional wellness, and healthy aging.

By combining evidence-informed health guidance with uplifting music and human connection, the program creates supportive environments where participants feel comfortable asking questions, learning together, and strengthening confidence in their health journey.

Where health, music, and human connection meet real lives.

“We were so grateful that Medicine & Music came to spend time with our residents. It was wonderful to see people who are usually quiet smiling, singing, and engaging during the wellness conversation. The discussion felt clear and respectful, and the music brought warmth and comfort to the room. It was a meaningful experience that supported both connection and emotional well-being — something we truly value for our community.”

— Amy Senior Living Activities Director

“Medicine & Music was created to bring trusted health education and emotional encouragement into community spaces in a way that feels welcoming and respectful. In a non-clinical setting, people often feel more comfortable asking questions and engaging in conversations about their health. When we combine physician-led guidance with music and human connection, we create an atmosphere that supports both the body and the heart.”

— Dr. Abraham Teklu Co-Founder & Physician Leader

“Medicine & Music was born from a simple belief — people do better when they feel seen, heard, and encouraged. My husband and I bring together our different gifts — medical insight and human-centered communication — to create welcoming spaces where health guidance, music, and connection can coexist. Our hope is to offer a space where people can feel supported, understood, and reminded they are not alone.”

-Delores “Dee-Dee” Teklu Co-Founder

“These stories are possible because of community partners and supporters who believe in whole-person wellness.”
